Pusat KOMAS strongly condemns the escalation of rhetoric regarding the Christmas celebrations held by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT). The escalation of inflammatory statements from PAS Youth Communications Chief Khairul Nadzir and PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan has detracted from the values of unity and mutual respect that Malaysia stands for.
The accusations by PAS Youth, which demanded an end to programmes involving Muslims in non-Muslim religious celebrations, reflect a narrow interpretation of religious sensitivities among Malaysia’s diverse communities. This undermines efforts to foster inclusivity and national harmony. PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan’s remarks further inflamed the issue, framing it as a challenge to Islamic principles and authorities, which only deepened the divide.
PAS has often affirmed its commitment to Malaysia’s multicultural identity. However, they have yet to demonstrate a genuine effort to uphold the rights and interests of all communities. Cultural celebrations held in these spaces should be seen as opportunities to celebrate Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity, not as affronts to other religions. We hope that their statements are not suggesting the legitimization of discrimination when non-Muslim communities celebrate their traditions openly and publicly.
We hope that PAS looks to countries like Indonesia who have demonstrated how diverse communities can celebrate cultural and religious events inclusively, despite being a country with a Muslim majority. Malaysia can draw inspiration from such approaches to ensure that celebrations in public spaces are inclusive and respectful, reinforcing our multicultural identity.

Pusat KOMAS commends the Christmas celebrations organised by KPKT which (according to the Minster) primarily included participants of Sabahan and Sarawakian descent, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to inclusivity and the recognition of our nation’s multicultural heritage. Such events foster goodwill and strengthen intercommunal relationships, as we Malaysians endeavour for through the sharing of our cultural and religious celebrations.
Attempts to politicize such occasions are detrimental to the unity we strive to uphold.
Malaysia needs leadership that unites, and not divides. Pusat KOMAS urges all parties to refrain from divisive rhetoric and instead engage in constructive dialogue. Emotional and accusatory statements, whether from political parties or government leaders, risk fostering animosity and eroding trust among the diverse communities that form Malaysian society. Unity and national harmony must be prioritized over partisan interests.
Pusat KOMAS reaffirms its commitment to advocating for a Malaysia that celebrates diversity and upholds values of justice and equality. We call on all Malaysians to reject divisive narratives and work towards a more inclusive and cohesive society.
